2013 Queen Rearing Course

Saturday May 18th 9:30am-4pm
OSU Columbus Campus

The objective of this queen rearing course is to provide beekeepers with an overview of basic queen rearing techniques and hands-on experience. Lecture and demonstration will be used to give beekeepers the opportunity to see the actual steps involved in queen rearing. Each beekeeper will receive a grafting frame, cell cups, and a grafting tool. The cost for the queen rearing class is $95 per person. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Attending beekeepers should have some basic queen rearing experience and at least two years of general beekeeping experience.

Greater Cleveland Beekeepers Annual Conference

Conference Topic: Natural Beekeeping

Keynote Speakers:

Ross Conrad: “Organic Approaches to Modern Apiculture”: Mr. Conrad learned his craft from the late Charles Mraz, world renowned beekeeper. Conrad is a former president of the Vermont Beekeepers Association, a regular contributor to Bee Culture – The Magazine of American Beekeeping and author of Natural Beekeeping: Organic Approaches to Modern Apiculture. Ross has given bee related presentations and led organic beekeeping workshops and classes throughout North America for many years. His beekeeping business, Dancing Bee Gardens, supplies friends, neighbors, and local stores with honey and candles among other bee related products, and provides bees for Vermont apple pollination in the spring.


Janet Clayton: “Honeybee Health”: Janet is a Master Beekeeper and served as editor of the WVBA Newsletter. Her recent work on a new honey processing facility has fueled her interest in this topic. Janet will give some valuable insights for beekeepers wishing to improve their honeybee health.

WCOBA – Dr. Larry Connor Evening Program

Dr. Larry Connor, author of Queen Rearing Essentials, Bee Sex Essentials, Increase Essentials, Bee-sentials and frequent contributor to the American Bee Journal and Bee Culture, is coming to Springfield, OH. Connor will present two topics on May 9, 2013 to area beekeepers. The first presentation will cover the work and importance of the juvenile honey bee exploring the role and impact of nurse bees within the colony. A second session will cover making increases through Nucs. Nucs are a valuable tool for the beekeeper interested in expansion or deadout replacements, the availability of locally adapted overwintered bees, or queen rearing.
