USDA VSH Bee Researcher to Speak at WCOBA Meeting
Garrett Dodds to share his USDA research efforts on VSH varroa hygienic bees on Dec 27, 2012
Garrett Dodds with the USDA ARS Honey Bee Breeding, Genetics and Physiology Research Lab in Baton Rouge will be a guest presenter at our Urbana, OH meeting at 6:30 PM on December 27th. Garrett will share some of the work and insights from his USDA research on VSH bees. Garrett raises many queens for the Breeding, Genetics and Physiology Research Lab and instrumentally inseminates most of the queens used in the lab’s research trials. He has participated in research projects on VSH bees in migratory pollination operations, the development of a Pol-Line strain of mite resistant commericially desirable bees, a pollination adapted strain of VSH bees, and the differences between the freeze killed brood (FKB, Minnesota Hygienic) trait and the VSH trait. Garrett’s USDA ARS research efforts should provide valuable insights to assist WCOBA’s initiative to improve the health, sustainability and availability of local Ohio bee stocks.
Join WCOBA and Garrett at our 6:30 PM December 27, 2012 club meeting in Urbana, OH. This meeting is open to all WCOBA members and the broader beekeeping community. To accommodate members from our other meeting sites the December meeting location will change to the Madison Champaign Educational Service Center located at 1512 US 68, Urbana, OH 43078. WCOBA will return to the Cedar Bog Nature Preserve for our January, 2013 Urbana meeting.
