OHIO STATE BEEKEEPERS’ ASSOCIATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING COMMITTEE REPORT September 6, 2007. BUDGET COMMITTEE: No report. E. A. S. COMMITTEE: Joe Kovaleski (Ohio Director) reported the 2007 conference, which was held in Newark Delaware in August, was a huge success. Well over 400 people attended. Included in this conference were a Short Course, Main Conference, Master Beekeeper exam (which generated 3 new E. A. S. Master Beekeepers), Honey Show, Honey Exchange, and vendors. The conference ran from August 6 through the 10. It was during this conference a new Chairman of the Board and Vice-Chairman was announced. Jim Bobb from PA will serve as the new Chairman and Kathy Summers will serve as his Vice-Chairman. Joe will not be able to attend the next E. A. S. directors meeting on October 13th. Therefore, Ron Hoopes appointed Dawn Feagan to go in his absence and represent Ohio. The next E. A. S. conference will be held in August 2008 at Murray State University in Murray Kentucky. EDUCATION COMMITTEE: Ron handed out a map where beekeeping clubs are located. Thus demonstrating those counties/areas that do not have any beekeeping clubs or groups. Dana suggested listing all of the beekeeping associations on our web page for those interested in becoming members to the local groups. Bee Culture Magazine’s web page does provide that kind of information and can be obtained quite easily. Dawn Feagan will send that information to Doug Pfeifer at the appropriate time. ELECTION NOMINATION COMMITTEE: Dana stated he wasn’t having much success in obtaining nominees. However, Ron Hoopes stated he had sent an email to all of the beekeeping associations asking for them to send Dana any nominees. Dana in the meantime will keep trying and will send a list of nominees to Kathy Summers to post in the upcoming newsletter. GRANT WRITER: Grants are in progress of being written and submissions are on hold until OSBA gets re-instated as a Non-Profit organization and obtains it 501C3 status. LEGISLATIVE, PAC COMMITTEE: Bob Hooker reported there have been a series of meeting with the director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture, Representative Zack Space’s office and Senator, Sherrod Brown all with outstanding outcomes. Originally the legislatures came to OSBA concerning the ever-growing problem of CCD (Colony Collapse Disorder). They have been very impressed with what OSBA is doing to help beekeepers in Ohio. Currently OSBA is trying to obtain a grant to cover the cost of providing beehives, equipment and bees to approximately 100 people in 10 rural counties in Ohio. These individuals would be required to take a beginning beekeeping course and would receive this package upon completion of the class. They would also be required to become OSBA members and attend their local bee clubs. The purpose of this would be to generate more beekeepers in this section of Ohio. MEETING COORDINATOR: Already been reported. See minutes. MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE: No report. NEWSLETTER COMMITTEE: Kathy Summers, Editor wasn’t able to attend but sent a report with Dawn Feagan. The deadline for the fall newsletter will be October 5, 2007. She asks that everyone please have his or her articles, photos and announcements to her by then. Kathy also wanted to remind the board this would be her last newsletter as Editor. It was at this time Dwight Wilson state he might have someone who would be willing to take over as Editor of the newsletter. He will ask this person and will report back to the board at a later time. There was a motion made at this time by Bob Hooker to have OSBA get a plaque to recognize and thank Kathy for all of her years of service. Dana Stahlman seconded the motion. A vote was cast and the motion passed. Dawn Feagan and Ron Hoopes will work together to come up with the wording on the plague for Kathy. OHIO MASTERBEEKEEPER PROGRAM: Ron mentioned the progress is slow in developing this program. However he feels very strongly that various levels and means in which to reach those levels should be implemented in the program. This is an ongoing project, which will take quite a while of careful development. PUBLICITY COMMITTEE: No report. QUEEN REARING PROGRAM: Already discussed. See the minutes.
